The Wooden eBike: A Sustainable and Innovative Design

Combining Science and Sustainability

The Berlin-based aceteam, led by designer Matthias Broda, has created the world's first wooden eBike. This innovative design combines the use of CNC technology and the knowledge of wood material to produce a sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

With the increasing need for eco-friendly alternatives in urban areas, the wooden eBike offers a unique solution. By utilizing wood as the main material for the frame, this design not only reduces CO2 emissions but also provides a lightweight and durable construction. The use of ash wood, known for its outstanding performance under stress, ensures a reliable and comfortable ride.

One of the key advantages of the wooden eBike is its cost efficiency. By employing CNC machinery, the production process becomes highly repeatable and customizable, making it suitable for small-scale mass production. This allows the price of the wooden eBike to be comparable to upper-class conventional bikes, making it affordable for a wide range of customers.

The wooden eBike has received recognition for its innovation and sustainability. In 2014, it was awarded the Green Buddy Award, followed by the Green Product Award in 2015. These accolades highlight the design's commitment to environmental consciousness and its contribution to a greener future.

With a 250W motor, the wooden eBike supports cyclists with a maximum speed of 25km/h and a range of approximately 60km. The integration of high-quality components such as Magura HS11 brakes, Shimano FC-R350 cranks, and Gates Carbon Drive chain ensures a smooth and reliable riding experience.

Not only does the wooden eBike offer a sustainable mode of transportation, but it also showcases the beauty of design and craftsmanship. The sleek and slim wooden frame, combined with integrated front and back lights, creates a visually stunning and functional piece of art.

The wooden eBike project, which started in 2013 and concluded in 2015, was a collaborative effort between aceteam and the Faculty of Wood Science and Technology of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. Through extensive research and testing, the team was able to overcome challenges related to the thickness and flexibility of the wood, resulting in an optimal frame construction.

The wooden eBike has received international acclaim and was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Vehicle, Mobility, and Transportation Design category in 2016. This prestigious recognition highlights the design's outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.

The wooden eBike is not only a mode of transportation but also a symbol of sustainable living and design excellence. With its unique combination of science and sustainability, this innovative design paves the way for a greener and more stylish future.
